In the end of the story Tortilla Curtain the most valuable event of the story is when the flood destroys all hopes and dreams washing away all the sins, hopes, and life. This event takes place in the last few pages of the book. The flood becomes a symbol of never ending disasters and pain. It is important because Candido and America had it bad already with no jobs, no home, and with a blind child. They had nothing , just a little bright light which was their child Soccoro. Even then Candido was already doubting any great future for his own daughter. He saw himself actually gibing away his daughter away to marry someone he owed money too. With the flood it destroyed everything America had a grip of life, "A grip of Hope".Just like when Candido helps his own enemy "Delany" the same man who was going to kill him, gave him a hand when Delany was drowning . Candido pulled him up and saved his life. Ironic how Candido became Delanys grip of life and death. However many fail to see the importance of the flood. The symbol it stands for. Other readers argue that the flood is not important because it didn't solve anything or ended with a happy ending. I disagree with them because the flood was the grip of life. The symbol of the tide turning not for the good but too show to never judge people about how they look and how they god there. Instead listen and help. Become a grip of life people need. It shouldn't take a flood to make people realize it too late.
